Girl On Sports
Girls and Sports…
During my endeavors to find an image for yesterday’s picture, I stumble upon this blog posting.  As a warning, I don’t normally offer my opinions on religion as it is a very personal and touchy subject for many, and especially not in a commentary on sports.  This post will be an exception as what I read was egregiously upsetting to me.
In the post the author argues that although he is comfortable with women participating in sport activities occasionally, he disagrees with women participating in competitive sports on a day-to-day basis.  His arguement is that it teaches women to behave in a more masculine manner which apparently makes them ill-prepared to be “Bibically obediently wives and mothers.”
I’m not going to go through his argument line by line because frankly, it will just make my blood boil.  Sure, sports can make women tougher and stronger, but don’t we live in a world that requires women to be as such?  What about the rising problem of obesity?  Or the great things that sports teach, like camaraderie, team work, the value of hard work, sportsmanship, all things that I think the Bible would be a-ok with.  I apologize that women in sports go against YOUR ideal portrait of a woman, but women can be both sexy and strong, caring and aggressive.
I sincerely hope that this is not a widely held opinion, because sports have brought nothing but good into my life and I hardly think whatever god I chose to subscribe to would mind.

So what better way to get my feet wet in the land of sports blogging than talking about a sport that I know basically nothing about.  (Except of course for watching at the bar, which as many of you know, often leads to less than lucid memories).
In the spirit of my love for sports all sorts and my desire to play in an aggressive team sport (I grew up playing soccer) I decided to give rugby a go.  Physical, yes. Confusing rules to us yanks, yes. Most amount of brute physical activity I’ve done in far too long, definitely.  Got me intrigued, absolutely.
For those of you who know as much or less than I, rugby, popular in many other nations worldwide, is played on a pitch(field).  To create an idea for of what its like: Think American Football, less pads, backwards passing.  That’s all I got so far, but I’m learning and I hope to share more as I plan on keeping it up.  Future posts will also include my commentary on other sports that I promise provide more insight and knowledge on than my first foray into rugby.
One thing I will say: To all of you who didn’t think women could play contact sports…think again (more on this later).
